Hmm, Interesting. I’ll go and quiz some people in a Phone shop about it, when I next get the chance.

I like how the VoIP integrates so well on Nokia phones. It’s superb on my E71, and I use it religiously to keep my call costs down at University.

On iPhone, there is the Media5-fone SIP Client as well that works very well. No need to jailbreak your iPhone. Work only on WiFi so far because of Apple restriction of VoIP over 3G.

If you jailbreak your iPhone there is a nice SIP client called SIPhon.

The handset on my desk is a SNOM 820 :)

I'm curious as to what kind of IP Phone that was on your desk; I have a Cisco 7970 running SIP firmware myself.

Yes, you can do exactly that. Because VoIP over 3G can be a bit unreliable you can also set your VoIP number to divert to your mobile number if you aren't online. That way you can use VoIP over WiFi on the N900 (or any other SIP device) at home or, if you're offline, you'll receive the call on your mobile (you'll have to pay for the divert charge but it's very cheap compared to international calls from your mobile or landline). Your relatives in the UK won't know the difference and will just be charged as though they were calling a normal UK landline.

The guys at VoIP.co.uk should be able to set this up for you.

Thanks for the video Dan, I have a question though.
I am currently living in Finland, no nothing to do with Nokia, and was thinking with the n900 I could ditch my landline which I only ever use for friends and family calling from the UK. Could I buy a UK phone no. through a voip provider and actually have people call me using that number?

Looks like the N900 is expected to ship on 7th November because I got a call saying Nokia had a problem with the product codes or something so they had to cancel the order and they re-ordered it and the guy I spoke to kept the discount and everything on there wooohooo!!
